Connecting with Country: Gulyangarri Public School development

Release date: 13 October 2023

In the heart of Liverpool, a new school is emerging with a strong connection to Country. Gulyangarri Public School, set to open its doors in early 2024, draws its name from the Darug language spoken by the Cabrogal Clan. Translated into English, it means ‘children’, highlighting the school’s student-centred approach. Just as Aboriginal Elders have passed down knowledge and culture to children over millennia, Gulyangarri Public School aims to continue these traditions, uniting the community in a learning journey that nurtures and empowers students. The school recognises and acknowledges Aboriginal history not only in its name and design but also in its development. Let’s take a deeper dive.

Designed with Country and rooted in history

The school's design is a nod to the Cumberland Plain and the Georges River, with its colour scheme and landscaping drawing inspiration from these natural wonders. The intention is clear: to create a learning environment reflecting the land and fostering an appreciation for its historical significance.

Construction process discovering ancestral artifacts

During the planning and site establishment work at Gulyangarri Public School, a treasure trove of Aboriginal artifacts was uncovered. These artefacts are a testament to the enduring connection between Aboriginal People and their ancestors, reflecting the ongoing relationship with the land. Most notably, stone tool artifacts predominantly made from silcrete were found, providing insights into the intricate trading networks between the Cabrogal Clan and neighbouring clans. To deepen the understanding of Aboriginal histories among students, these artefacts will be displayed within the school premises.

A symbolic logo for a bright future

Gulyangarri Public School recently unveiled its new logo, which was designed by an Aboriginal owned and operated agency called Ngakkan Nyaagu (NGNY) and created in consultation with the Liverpool Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG). This meaningful engagement has helped to ensure that new school is a place of belonging for all - bringing together the old and new and moving towards an exciting future together.

The logo encapsulates the school's core values and ethos; ambition, courage, kindness, and safety which serve as the cornerstones of the school's identity.

Principal Ian Tapuska expressed his excitement about the school's journey, stating:

"Unveiling Gulyangarri Public School's logo and motto to our community marks an exciting milestone. Being located in the vibrant city of Liverpool, our logo and motto perfectly align with the incredible opportunities this city has to offer. We look forward to opening our doors to students and their families in early 2024 and eagerly await the opportunity to welcome them to a world of possibility in our new school."

Gulyangarri Public School will not only be a place of learning but also a place of intercultural understanding and connection where the past is respected, and the present is celebrated. The Liverpool community is excited for this new school to be part of their vibrant neighbourhood.
