Infrastructure trainees prepare for their 'Future Pathways'

Release date: 17 July 2023

The current 2022 Infrastructure Traineeship cohort planned and delivered the 2-day Future Pathways event to gain the skills needed to prepare for their future career. This is the second year that the Future Pathways event has been held.

With only 8 months remaining before they graduate, the 2022 trainees used the 2 days to gain skills in preparing for their future transition into the workforce. Almost 70 trainees from across regional and metropolitan NSW attended the event.

On the first day, trainees participated in workshops addressing how to grow their networking skills, building a resume, interviewing skills, and real-life problem solving. Recent Infrastructure Traineeship graduates shared their experiences on how to negotiate the transition from the traineeship into the workplace.

The second day provided opportunities for trainees to hear from prospective employers in the infrastructure industry. The trainees were able to ask questions of an industry panel with representatives from the government, construction and consultancy sectors. Janine Lonergan, Acting Chief Executive of Infrastructure NSW, gave a special address to the trainees pointing out the importance of infrastructure to the future growth of NSW. This was followed by an industry networking session, with trainees able to speak directly with over 50 invited guests from government, construction and consultancies to hear what employers are looking for in their new recruits. There were representatives from School Infrastructure NSW, Health Infrastructure, Transport for NSW, as well as many large construction companies.

Well done to all the 2022 trainees who showed that they are well and truly ready to tackle the real world.

The Infrastructure Traineeship Program was launched in 2020 to respond to the high youth unemployment due to COVID-19. Through the program, trainees combine study towards a nationally accredited Certificate IV training course and work through three 8-month rotations in government and industry placements. The program is wider in scope than just construction, embracing the entire infrastructure sector, with career opportunities for trainees across urban design, systems and IT, business skills, project management, as well as the traditional build and construct trades.

The program is a partnership, bringing government and industry together in a collaborative approach to deliver career options in the infrastructure sector for young people.
