Darlington Public School on display

Release date: 11 July 2018

Darlington Public School celebrated NAIDOC with a barbecue last week and the department’s major works team was there to  talk to the school community as part of the early planning for the school’s redevelopment.

The aim is to capture the unique indigenous heritage of the school. The project will cater for the projected enrolment growth in the area, and includes new teaching spaces, a new hall, a library, administration and staff facilities, a canteen, a covered outdoor learning area and preschool spaces. A highlight was the students and parents writing down their ideas on what they would like to see in their new school. More than 400 post-it notes were placed on a wall, with suggestions including:

  • indigenous elders to teach students
  • cultural song, dance and instrument lessons
  • Koori sports
  • growing bush tucker plants at the school.

The project team is incorporating this feedback, as well as responses from a P&C survey, into the concept design.

Cultural heritage advisor, Uncle Jimmy, also attended.
