O’Connell Street Public School receives heritage award for design

Release date: 01 June 2018

O’Connell Street Public School has been recognised by the National Trust at the 2018 Heritage Awards, winning in the highly prestigious “Adaptive Re-use” category. The award recognises a heritage building that has been effectively re-purposed for another use.

O’Connell Street Public School is located on the site of the former Kings School which was built in 1837. The site was listed on the National Trust Register in 1976, which officially designated it as a heritage significant site.

Designed by TZG Architects, the O’Connell Street Public School project was commended for the adaptive reuse of the heritage significant site which, after a $40 million NSW Government investment, now provides flexible, highly serviced teaching and recreation space for 1,000 children alongside facilities to support after hours care.

The school opened in early 2018, ahead of schedule, and it is temporarily hosting Parramatta Public School students, who await the opening of their own new school which is being upgraded.
