Work begins on new home for Cleveland Street Intensive English High School

Release date: 13 December 2017

Students at Cleveland Street Intensive English High School will soon benefit from a new $30m school at a new address with construction already underway.

Education Minister Rob Stokes today visited the site for the relocated school to be renamed Central Sydney Intensive English High School to review the start of works.

“The project will involve students relocating to the vacated Alexandria Park Community School later this month and then moving to the refurbished school in Mitchell Road in late 2018,” Mr Stokes said.

The new Central Sydney Intensive English High School will include 23 classrooms including food technology, art, science and music, as well as a library and hall.

“These new world-class facilities will support an enhanced learning environment for the school community in a mix of new and refurbished buildings – the heritage of Building DD (circa 1890) will be retained and incorporated into the design of the modern facilities,” Mr Stokes said.

“The new facilities will boast the latest learning technology and reflect future focused learning principles to enhance the study of the intensive English curriculum.”

The new high school at Mitchell Road is part of a broader project that will involve a new Inner City High School at Cleveland Street and a new school at the former Alexandria Park junior school site on Park Road.

This project is one of more than 120 new schools and major upgrades the NSW Government is funding over the next four years under a $4.2 billion school building program announced as part of the 2017/18 state Budget. This is the biggest investment in public education infrastructure in the history of NSW.
