Plans unveiled for major upgrade of Newcastle East Public School

Release date: 07 November 2017

Work will soon get underway on a major upgrade at historic Newcastle East Public School, with the works about to go to tender.

Education Minister Rob Stokes said that the project proves the Government’s commitment to ensuring public schools maintain their ability to provide local students with outstanding learning facilities.

“The upgrade will cater for current and projected growth in the inner Newcastle area” Mr Stokes said.

“The design is an excellent example of how innovative thinking can maximise the utility of an inner-urban site.”

Mr Stokes said the Department of Education was mindful of the special role the school has had in the history of Newcastle in its planning for the upgrade, recognising the school had provided education facilities for two centuries.

“The project will improve and grow the school with new future-focused learning spaces designed to accommodate new and emerging teaching methods and technologies, while respecting the heritage value of the original school buildings,” he said.

The project involves:

  • the construction of four new permanent classrooms
  • a new covered outdoor learning area / communal gathering space
  • the replacement of the existing roof of the heritage building, and
  • the removal of two demountable classrooms to provide better outdoor play space.

The plan is the preferred design of a Project Reference Group formed in October 2016 and made up of  representatives of the school, the P&C and the Department.

The work is about to go to tender, with construction due to start next year and completion expected in 2021.

The Newcastle East Public School is one of more than 120 school projects funded over the next four years under a $4.2 billion school building program announced as part of the 2017/18 state Budget. This is the biggest investment in public education infrastructure in the history of NSW.
