First look at innovative design for the new Ultimo Public School

Release date: 02 November 2017

Plans are now on public exhibition for a new Ultimo Public School featuring an innovative design that maximizes play areas and greenspace for up to 800 students.

The school facing Jones Street will be single storey and increase in height as it moves towards Wattle Street where it will reach three storeys.

Education Minister Rob Stokes said the school will be a wonderful addition to the community at Ultimo when it is completed.

“I am proud of the quality design of this new school – it will be superb,” Mr Stokes said.

“This will fit well into this suburb’s landscape and community life, even including a preschool.”

“Ultimo has been transformed over the last decade into a cosmopolitan urban community which is reflected in the design of this brand new school.”

The project will include:

  • 30 classrooms;
  • A library, hall, indoor and outdoor play spaces and afterschool care facilities; and,
  • Multi-function spaces for use by the school, as well as after hours and on weekends use by the local community.

To minimise disruption, students at the existing Ultimo Public School will move into a temporary pop-up school that is now being built at Wentworth Park from Term 1 next year while construction of the new school takes place.

The new Ultimo Public School is one of more than 120 school projects funded over the next four years under a $4.2 billion school program in the 2017/18 state Budget. This is the biggest investment in public education infrastructure in the history of NSW.

The school was the work of a consortium including DesignInc, Lacoste and Stevenson and Paris-based BMC2 selected in December 2016 following a design excellence competition that attracted leading international architectural firms.

The plans are currently on public exhibition for comment until the end of November and can be viewed here
