A new vision for Hunter Sports High takes shape
Release date: 07 November 2017
Video showing how Hunter Sports High School will be dramatically transformed by a $45.1 million redevelopment has been released.
Education Minister Rob Stokes today visited the school at Gateshead to inspect the start of works on one of the NSW Government’s flagship school upgrade projects.
“This is one of the biggest school infrastructure projects underway anywhere in NSW right now,” Mr Stokes said.
“This exciting redevelopment demonstrates the strength of our commitment to providing a high quality of education in the best possible learning environments for students in the Hunter.”
The school, the only sports-focused school north of Sydney, has a history of producing the Hunter region’s greatest sporting talent, including Rugby League stars Greg Inglis, Kade Snowden and Tyrone Roberts.
The redevelopment is being staged to enable students to remain on site during construction.
Stage one of the redevelopment is underway with the partial demolition of the school’s existing buildings to enable construction of new permanent facilities including:
- 26 general classrooms
- a science laboratory and specialist learning spaces for woodwork, metalwork and food technology
- a sports and exercise complex
- canteen facilities and
- an administration block and staff accommodation.
Stage two will include a new library, visual arts and music classrooms, and stage three will involve landscaping and the demolition of the remaining existing buildings.
The work is expected to be complete for the start of the 2019 school year.
The Hunter Sports High School upgrade is one of more than 120 school projects funded over the next four years under a $4.2 billion school building program announced as part of the 2017/18 state Budget. This is the biggest investment in public education infrastructure in the history of NSW.
