Share Our Space program a growing success these school holidays

Release date: 27 September 2018

A record 180+ government schools across NSW will open up their playgrounds, ovals, and sports courts to their local communities to use these school holidays as the Share Our Space Program continues to grow.

The enormously popular program has grown to include more than four times as many participating schools since the trial was first held at the beginning of the last summer holidays.

This $30 million initiative officially became a permanent program during the 2018 winter school holidays.

Education Minister Rob Stokes said he was delighted to see the number of participating schools continue to grow each school holidays since the program first began in December 2017.

“Schools are at the heart of our local communities, which is why I am thrilled to see more and more schools opening their gates every school holidays,” Mr Stokes said.

Mr Stokes said this common sense approach ensures local communities get the most use out of their local public schools. By opening up playgrounds and sporting facilities we can also encourage local communities to keep active.

“It makes no sense that students have to catch a bus to cricket nets or basketball courts if they have a local school just across the road,” Mr Stokes said.

The Share Our Space Program is part of the NSW Government’s $290 million Open Spaces and Green Sydney package.

Participating schools receive a $5000 grant they can use to help upgrade their facilities for community and school use. Participating schools will be open during the upcoming school holidays from October 1 to 12, between 8am to 5pm.
