Demountable classrooms re-purposed for flood impacted communities

Release date: 27 August 2022

Demountable classrooms are being transformed into emergency accommodation for families displaced by flooding events in the Northern Rivers and North Coast region.

Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell recently toured the factory where demountable classrooms are being converted into temporary housing.

“With flood recovery ongoing, it’s amazing to see our demountable classrooms repurposed in such an innovative and life-changing way,” Ms Mitchell said.

“The demountables are being completely stripped out and put back together to support urgent housing needs. These modular homes are quick and easy to build, fit out, transport and install.

“The NSW Government is continuing to look at all partnerships and innovative methods to support the communities impacted by the multiple flood events this year.”

Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience and Minister for Flood Recovery Steph Cooke said the NSW Government is working to provide a range of mediumterm housing solutions.

“Housing is our biggest challenge in the Northern Rivers which is why the NSW Government is rolling out temporary housing sites, motorhomes and caravans as well as providing Back Home grants and Rental Support payments,” Ms Cooke said.

“The process is underway to convert more than 450 demountable classrooms into 248 housing units with the capacity to accommodate more than 900 residents.”

The NSW Government is investing $20 million in repurposing demountables for 248 temporary housing units, which will be progressively delivered to the Northern Rivers region over the next six months.
